Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel has publicly stated he is “forever indebted” to Washington Commanders coach Dan Quinn for helping him confront personal struggles with alcohol approximately 10 years ago.
The two coaches will face each other Sunday for the first time in their current roles. Quinn’s intervention during their time together came at a critical moment that McDaniel credits with saving both his career and personal life. Quinn addressed his relationship with McDaniel during a media session on Wednesday.

McDaniel has been open about a defining moment that altered the trajectory of his coaching career. On January 4, 2016, Quinn, along with then-Atlanta Falcons coaches Kyle Shanahan and Raheem Morris, confronted him about concerns regarding his drinking.
McDaniel admitted that their observations were accurate and took them to heart at the time. The conversation occurred after McDaniel had been dismissed from his position as an offensive assistant with the Houston Texans. That firing was partially connected to alcohol affecting his job performance.
McDaniel had already spent more than two years away from the NFL before Shanahan provided him another opportunity in Washington in 2011.
The intervention carried the most weight when McDaniel informed his wife, Katie, about the discussion. Her reaction served as the catalyst he needed to make a permanent change.
McDaniel reflected on that period during HBO’s Hard Knocks in 2023, stating that the moment led him to commit to sobriety. He has not consumed alcohol since that decision and continues to maintain his commitment today.
