Sean Payton sparked controversy after the Denver Broncos rallied from 19 points down to defeat the New York Giants on Sunday.

While praising rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart, Payton took subtle jabs at former starter Russell Wilson, who finished 0-3 in his three starts this season.

The comments suggested the Broncos were eager to face Wilson and wanted the loss at their hands to be the reason the Giants switched to Dart.

Wilson fired back on social media, calling Payton “classless” and referencing the coach’s involvement in the bounty scandal.

The public exchange escalated tensions between two prominent figures in professional football.

Analyst Dan Patrick addressed the situation on his show, expressing disappointment in Payton’s decision to revisit the past.

“Move on! I was disappointed in Sean. You’ve got Bo Nix, you got the win, move on,” Patrick said on his show.

Patrick acknowledged the difficult end to Wilson’s tenure in Denver but argued the current controversy lacked justification.

He pointed to the Broncos’ front office as the real culprit, noting they orchestrated a questionable trade and committed $242.5 million over five years.

That contract averaged nearly $48.5 million per season while surrendering valuable draft picks and players.

Wilson’s demands, including wanting his own office, complicated matters, but Patrick believes it was time to let the issues fade.

The feud between Wilson and Payton dates to 2022, when Wilson entered the season as Denver’s starting quarterback.

Wilson was released afterward and played in 2024 with the Pittsburgh Steelers before joining the Giants as their starter this season.

He now serves as a backup, continuing a career marked by sudden transitions and high-profile decisions.
