The Tampa Bay Buccaneers came out flat on Monday night in a 24-9 loss to the Detroit Lions, which was their first game under 20 points all season, and dropped the team to 5-2 heading into an easy matchup at the New Orleans Saints on Sunday.
It was a disappointing performance from quarterback Baker Mayfield, who is a leading MVP candidate through seven games but wasn’t at his best against Detroit, routinely overthrowing his targets en route to just 228 passing yards on 50 attempts with a touchdown and an interception.
Apparently, Mayfield could have been working through an injury, as NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero shared on X that he was officially limited in practice on Wednesday due to a knee injury.

Backup QB Teddy Bridgewater (teeth) did not practice.

There is no word on the severity of the injury, but the fact that Mayfield practiced at all is a good sign that his status for the Saints game isn’t in doubt.
To make matters slightly worse, backup quarterback Teddy Bridgewater didn’t practice either due to an issue with his teeth, which is certainly not something you see on an injury report every day.
Tampa’s offense struggled mightily after losing star receiver Mike Evans to a broken collarbone in the second quarter, which was a disappointing way for him to return from his previous injury and will almost surely bring his iconic 1,000-yard receiving streak to an unceremonious end.
Mayfield’s health is suddenly a major plot point heading into the Saints game, so keep an eye out for updates on his health as the week progresses.
