The Minnesota Vikings are set to have their third different starting quarterback over the past three years, as Kirk Cousins and Sam Darnold both signed lucrative deals elsewhere over the past two offseasons.
2024 first-round pick J.J. McCarthy missed his rookie year with a meniscus injury, but his era is beginning and there is plenty of excitement to see what he is capable of as this organization’s new franchise QB.
However, not everybody is sold on McCarthy, including Colin Cowherd of The Herd, who recently threw some water on his flame.
“J.J. McCarthy, you’re going to see it very quickly. (He) Is not what people think… J.J. McCarthy is a C QB. Have you ever seen J.J. McCarthy’s 4th quarter college stats and playing from behind… they’re terrible,” Cowherd said.

McCarthy got drafted based on his athleticism, his efficiency, and his ability to consistently win games, but while Cowherd is probably being too dramatic with his assessment of McCarthy’s college career, there is some level of concern.
He is still unproven, and he thrived in a run-first offense at Michigan that didn’t require him to do too much, so it’s fair to not be sold on him just yet until he proves himself.
McCarthy showed some intriguing ability in the preseason last year, and while that doesn’t mean a whole lot in the grand scheme of things, the Vikings and Kevin O’Connell have consistently proven that they know how to make their quarterbacks look good.
The year Darnold just had should earn the organization the benefit of the doubt, and while it’s valid to have concerns about McCarthy, he has what it takes to quiet all those concerns very quickly.
