Analyst Predicts 1 New QB Contract Could Set Record

The market for quarterbacks across the NFL has steadily risen over the past two or three years, as one contract after another has raised the salary ceiling.

This offseason, it is widely expected that another quarterback, Brock Purdy of the San Francisco 49ers, will receive a contract extension, and many have been speculating how much that deal will be worth.

Few feel he deserves the kind of money Dak Prescott received with a four-year, $240 million extension from the Dallas Cowboys, but one analyst predicted Purdy could end up getting an even bigger deal than that and set a new NFL record.

“You just do the deal and say it’s the price of doing business with quarterbacks these days,” Jason Fitzgerald of Over The Cap said, via Ari Meirov of The 33rd Team.

Fitzgerald said that given Purdy’s track record and the fact he rescued San Francisco in a way, it is simply something that the 49ers must do.

Purdy was the last player taken in the 2022 NFL Draft, and at the time, the 49ers had decided to go with Trey Lance, who was entering his second season, as their starter.

They had traded quite a bit to be able to take Lance with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, but he was clearly a work in progress and then suffered a season-ending ankle injury in Week 2.

Jimmy Garoppolo, his replacement and their starter prior to that season, then sustained his own season-ending injury in Week 13, allowing Purdy to take over.

He led the 49ers to the NFC Championship Game in 2022 and took them to the brink of a Super Bowl championship in 2023.

This season, Purdy’s stats dipped a bit amidst a massively injury-riddled season for the Niners, but he is arguably a legitimate franchise player and, at worst, a second-tier NFL quarterback.

Given good health and a couple of moderate roster moves, the 49ers should be able to return to championship contention in 2025.
